Abstract:

Like many African languages, Mozambique is characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity. According to Chimbutane (2012), through a 2002 curriculum reform, 16 out of an estimated 24 Mozambican languages have been brought into primary education, giving access to bilingual education based on learners’ home language. Among them, only Macua, Changana, Sena, Lomwe and Chuabo are the most widely spoken (op.cit) and, as a result, the most studied and well documented languages.

Our objective is to study and document the minority and understudied languages of southern and central Mozambique to allow for full integration of bilingual education into the formal education system of Mozambique.

This project intends to cover all Linguistic fields and for that, we will work with some of the most important universities that deals with African linguistic in africa.

Target languages in Mozambique:

  • Copi, Gitonga and Xitshwa (southern Mozambique);
  • Nyungwe, Ciwutee (Cibalke, Cimanyika), Ndau (central Mozambique).
